Property and Area Description
Property Details
This bright, cheerful and quirky old Moorish cottage is our much loved holiday home and is built over several levels with stunning views out over the Rio Santo Gorge. We have tried to think of everything to make this a perfect holiday retreat and it is well equipped and welcoming. There are traditional wooden beams and terracotta floor tiles with bright local rugs, an abundance of pictures, candles, pottery, English books and games.
The tiny sitting room stays blissfully cool on even the hottest days and a wood burning stove turns it into cosy haven during the winter months. There is a comfortable double bedroom with plenty of storage space, a completely whacky bathroom and a smart, fully fitted kitchen giving access to the two terraces making eating al fresco very easy. There are sunloungers, a BBQ and table and chairs on the top terrace which, with it's glorious views during the day and the amazingly clear skies at night is a truly wonderful place to while away an hour or two.
Every room has a heater making the house suitable for winter holidays as well. The ski resort is less than an hour away and the Costa Tropical is one of Europe's warmest spots during the winter.
Area Description
Albunuelas is situated in a glorious position at the head of the Lecrin valley which the Moors called the Valley of Happiness and it is easy to see why. An extrememly fertile area with an abundance of water, it sits protected by the surrounding Sierras. The Alpujarra are opposite and the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada form a fairy tale backdrop. A place of contrasts from the lush, dark green citrus groves to the spindly almond and olive trees, deep ravines and cliffs and the pine forest above the village. The terraced campos are full of citrus, persimmons, chirrimoya, pomegranate, avocados and a seemingly endless variety of vegetable crops.
The village dates back to the 10th/11th Century during the Moorish era of the Nazrid dynasty. The famous G7 walk from the Western to Eastern Mediterranean, following in the footsteps of Al Idrisi, the first Arab mapmaker, runs through the village and very close to our house. This is fabulous walking country whether you want a lazy stroll along the campos or an energetic hike up to a castle or into the mountains.
Various traders call at the adjacent square every morning to ensure you don't run out of bread etc. and there are two small supermarkets, a bank, pharmacy and Doctor's surgery in the upper part of the village. Last but not least there are, of course, several wonderful bars serving tapas and a couple where you can also get a meal.
The Costa Tropical is an easy drive and has so far escaped the worst excesses of the other Costas and has remained thankfully less developed and more Spanish.
The Sierra Nevada is home to Europe's most southerly ski slopes and the modern ski resort can be reached in under an hour. It has some of the best Spring snow conditions in Europe and offers a wide variety of runs.
We have found the Spanish here to be incredibly friendly and generous and this is a wonderful place to sample rural Spain yet still have easy access to the Coast (Salobrena 40 mins.), skiing in the Sierra Nevada (under an hour away), the Western gateway to the beautiful Alpujarra (20 mins.), and Granada with the magical Alhambra and great retail therapy (35 mins.). This is one of the few places in the world where you can truly claim to ski in the morning and sit on the beach in the afternoon.
